Here's a nice starter jazz lick in E major using almost nothing but arpeggios. It takes place over a I-VI-ii-V progression (E6-C#7b9-F#m7-B7b9), or you could use it over a iii-VI-ii-V (G#m7-C#7b9-F#m7-B7b9) as well. These progressions are also known as a "turnaround."
